How you are perceived depends, in large part, on how you are dressed. It is important to make certain that you suit is well tailored and in the current style. Here are some men’s suit tips that will help you to make sure that you hit the mark.

While men’s clothing stores stock business suits in every conceivable color and pattern, very few of them should ever actually be worn. Stick to solid neutrals, like black, navy, and dark gray, for a versatile business suit that will be equally appropriate in a high end restaurant as it is in the board room. Similar to their variety of colors and patterns, men’s clothing stores often have suits in a number of different fabrics. Stay away from cheap polyester suits that will be staticky and noisy as you walk. Look for wool or wool blend suits instead. If you are in a warmer are or looking for a suit to wear in the summer, shop for tropical weight wool which will be cooler.

Pin stripes, thin chalk colored lines that run vertically, are often seen on both black and navy suits. While pin stripes have a slimming effect on many men, unfortunately they tend to only be in fashion for short periods of time. If you are purchasing a suit in the hopes of using it for more than a single season, then opt for a solid color instead.

Suit jackets are available in two general styles. These are single breasted, which have a single line of buttons, and double breasted, which have two lines of buttons. Although double breasted jackets, like pin stripes, are occasionally in style, the current style is a singe breasted suit jacket with a single button. In any event, your suit jacket should have no more than three buttons.

There are a couple other items that you should check on a suit jacket before purchasing the suit. Make sure that the lapels on your suit jacket are streamlined, and lay flat against your jacket instead of sticking up. Check the vent on the back of the jacket to make certain that it is lying flat against your rear when standing.
